Information sources See The Green Directory 2006 – 2008, the UK’s most comprehensive directory of sustainability contacts, ranging from organic food outlets and green shoes to green employment agencies and local authorities. Its 2006 – 2008 edition is available from www.cat.org.uk Other websites listing organisations working on ESD include: www.oneworld.net www.venue.co.uk and www.vois.org.uk
Introduction No politician is keen to support legislation that goes beyond what the public – ie his / her electorate – will accept. The challenge for ESD and civil society’s third sector is to meet the pressing need to first mobilise and mainstream public opinion, then link it to the positive policy alternatives that are available. The way ahead may appear difficult, but the choice is as simple as it is stark. Should society continue to blindly pursue short-term and increasingly unsustainable political policies decided by self serving economic interests? Or would public policy concerns be better discussed and determined by a suitably informed and democratised citizenry? The Catch 22 for the third sector and education alike is that governments are elected on manifesto policies they then pursue through appropriate resourcing. Our global unsustainability throws up the paradoxical need for governments to fund programmes that challenge the very policies they’re elected to deliver.
