www.nottinghamdeclaration.org The Nottingham Declaration was launched during autumn 2000 and the website has been relaunched in 2008. It’s now become a living, continually undated, site including current climate change information and material produced specifically for local authority members and officers.
There are increasing pressures on local authorities to take action. In December 2007 the LGA called for all councils to sign the Declaration and publish a strategy within twelve months. LAA outcome indicators and Comprehensive Assessments subsequently embraced climate change mitigation and adaptation concerns.
There are numerous benefits:
The initiative offers a focal point, support and resources for
local authority climate change action.
It helps make a more informed and stronger response to the challenges
ahead.
It helps signatory councils save money (through the introduction
of energy saving measures) and benefit from best practice examples.
The Declaration website includes a tried and tested climate change
action plan.
Councils signing the Nottingham Declaration commit themselves to develop plans within two years (together with their partners and local communities) to address both the impacts and the causes of climate change.

Stakeholder Forum activities support preparations for UNEP Governing Councils, annual meetings (such as that of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development) and one-off Conferences and Summits. In the UK it has facilitated stakeholder input into a range of UN events, including the Earth Summit and WSSD. It also works to bring expertise to policy and research development, organising education and training programmes and disseminating information about the global and intergovernmental agenda on sustainability.
Stakeholder Forum produces three newsletters, which can be accessed on line. Network 2015 is a monthly report on global sustainability concerns, while Outreach 2015 is published during UN events. Its ieg-dossier is the online information resource which focuses on strengthening the UN’s role in sustainability.
